The 2020 NHL Prospect Tournament held annually at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Michigan, was canceled by the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

The Red Wings host the annual eight-team tournament for top NHL prospects held in early September, prior to the opening of NHL training camps.

The 2019 tournament was won by the Red Wings, who defeated the Dallas Stars in the final. Other teams participating were the Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks.

The Red Wings also announced that their training camp for the 2020-21 season would be shifted from Traverse City to Little Caesars Arena.

There is no date set for the start of next season. Detroit’s 2019-20 season ended after it was one of seven teams that did not qualify for the NHL Return to Play Plan announced May 26. The Red Wings were 31st in the NHL standings (17-49-5, .275 points percentage) when the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

“The health and safety of our fans, players and staff is our top concern,” Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said. “Based on discussions with local health experts, we have decided to hold our 2020-21 training camp at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. We look forward to returning to Traverse City next year. The Traverse City community is extremely hospitable to our organization, and Centre Ice Arena is an ideal location for us to hold our events each September.”
