The Seattle NHL expansion team continues to work on its nickname but said this week it has no timetable to announce it.

“We’re working as hard as we can,” NHL Seattle vice president of corporate communications Katie Townsend told ESPN on Friday. “We know how badly our fans want it.”

NHL Seattle said it is working with the NHL on the trademark for a nickname and logo and the pause to the 2019-20 season due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus has not delayed the process.

“We will wait to begin general seat selection and we look for the right time to reveal our team name and brand,” NHL Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke said in a statement Thursday. “We recognize the excitement around this, and we appreciate your patience.”

The team planned to begin seat selection at NHL Seattle Preview Center this month.

“We never want to be tone-deaf in rolling something out that should be, for many people, an exciting moment,” Townsend said. “We can do this when the time is right.”

Seattle became the NHL’s 32nd team on Dec. 4, 2018 and is scheduled to begin play in the 2021-22 season. The construction phase for New Arena at Seattle Center started in January.
